The Keffe D verdict, and what comes next
Updated Oct 4, 2026
Tupac Shakur was shot on the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996 and died six days later. For 27 years no one was charged. In 2023 prosecutors arrested Duane "Keffe D" Davis, a former Compton gang figure who had, over the years, described the drive-by in interviews and in a memoir, placing himself in the car from which the shots were fired.
His trial ran through August 2026. The prosecution's case was built largely on Davis's own public accounts, with the state arguing that he organised the hit and supplied the gun. The defense argued those accounts were fiction, told for money and attention. Among the witnesses the defense called over August 27 and 28 were former Las Vegas police officers, one of whom testified that he had been told to "stand down" on arresting Davis years earlier. Davis did not testify. Both sides rested on August 28, and closing arguments were heard the following Monday.
On September 1, 2026 the jury convicted Davis of murder with a deadly weapon with intent to promote a criminal gang. Sentencing is set for October 13 at 10 a.m. in Clark County District Court. The gang enhancement carries a possible life term; at 63, any long sentence is effectively life. Davis has said he will appeal, and in a jailhouse interview around September 5 insisted he is innocent and was not at the scene.
The case is filed under Grim. Guilt was established by verdict, and the sentence is the next thing the board is waiting on.
